What the symptom usually means

This table narrows the fault. It does not replace the measurement, which is why the checkup records actual voltages rather than guessing from the noise.
How we test before replacing
- Battery resting and cranking voltage. Both written down. A battery that reads fine at rest can still collapse under crank.
- Load and CCA test. Measured against the rating printed on the battery.
- Starter current draw. Clamp meter on the starter feed. A starter pulling too much current is failing even if it still turns.
- Feed, earth and solenoid. Voltage drop across the heavy cables and the earth strap, which is a common and cheap fix people miss.
- Alternator output. At idle and at 2,000 rpm, because a starter that keeps failing is often a charging fault upstream.
- The estimate. Repair or replace, itemised in writing, approved by you before work begins.
