Car AC and electrics after heavy rain or flooding: what to do first
Reviewed by G.M. Manigandan, founder and lead technician · Last reviewed
If the car sat in or was driven through deep water, do not start it until it has been checked. Water drawn into the engine can wreck it on a single start, and water in the cabin reaches wiring and control modules that sit low in the car. After ordinary heavy rain with no flooding, the usual causes are a blocked drain, a damp cabin filter and connectors that have started to corrode.
Two different situations
The advice for the two cases is nearly opposite, so decide which one you have.
- Flooded: the car stood in water, or was driven through water deep enough to reach the engine bay, the door sills or the cabin floor.
- Heavy rain only: the car got wet, drove through puddles, but water did not reach the engine bay or the inside of the car.
If the car sat in or drove through deep water
1. Do not start it, and do not restart it if it stalled
Water that has been drawn into the engine's air intake does not compress, and turning the engine over can bend internal parts or crack the engine. Switch off the ignition, leave the car where it is if it is safe, and arrange recovery to a workshop.
2. Electrics are at risk before the A/C is
Many cars carry control modules, seat wiring and airbag connectors under the seats or in the footwells, and the fuse and relay boxes, the blower motor and its resistor sit low too. At the front, the condenser, its fan motor and the A/C wiring are low as well. Muddy water carries silt into all of these.
3. A car that works the next day can still fail later
Corrosion forms in connectors over days and weeks. A car that starts and cools normally right after the water has gone can develop intermittent faults, dashboard warnings or a blown fuse a month on. That is why it is worth a proper check even when it seems fine.
4. Soaked carpets and underlay
Wet carpet and underlay hold moisture against the floor and the wiring beneath it, and give off a musty smell. They need to come out and be dried properly, not just left in the sun.
5. Hybrids and electric cars
Do not touch a flooded hybrid or electric car. Contact the manufacturer's service network. We confirm the scope before taking on a hybrid or electric car, so share the model and fuel type first.
If you plan to make an insurance claim, photograph the water level before the car is moved, and tell your insurer before it is repaired.
If it was only heavy rain
1. Weak cooling and misted glass in humid weather
In very humid air, most of the evaporator's work goes into condensing moisture rather than cooling the air, so the vent temperature looks less cold than on a dry day, and that is normal. The real faults to rule out are a blocked cabin filter and a drain that is keeping the housing wet. Adding refrigerant to a correctly charged system makes cooling worse, so airflow and drainage come first.
2. Water on the floor
Clear, odourless water on the passenger side after the A/C has run is condensate from a blocked drain. Water that appears after rain, even with the A/C off, is a rain leak: a blocked cowl or sunroof drain, or a door seal. The passenger floor guide explains the first kind.
3. An A/C fuse that blows only when it rains
A wire that has chafed where it passes through the bulkhead, or a displaced rubber grommet, can short when water reaches it. Do not fit a bigger fuse. A larger fuse removes the protection and lets the wiring itself become the fuse, which is a fire risk.
4. A condenser packed with mud
The condenser sits at the front of the car and collects silt and road dirt through the monsoon. A blocked condenser shows as weak cooling in traffic that improves on the move. The traffic cooling guide covers that pattern.
5. A musty smell after the rains
A wet evaporator housing and a damp filter. The smell guide explains how it is cleared.
What you can safely check yourself
- Note how high the water reached: the wheel, the sill, the seat base, the dashboard. It tells the technician what to open.
- Lift the floor mats and press the carpet. If it is wet, tell the workshop.
- Look at the cabin filter if you can reach it. A wet or muddy filter needs replacing.
- Try the blower on each speed, the windows, the lights and the wipers, and write down anything that is slow or intermittent. Do not keep cranking or restarting a car that has been in deep water.
Do not use a heater or hair dryer on connectors, and do not pour water or cleaners into a fuse box.
What a proper workshop check involves
For a flooded car, the engine and its oil are checked for water before anything is turned over. The battery terminals, the fuse and relay boxes and the A/C and fan connectors are inspected for corrosion and cleaned. Wiring and modules under the seats are checked, a scan tool is read for stored fault codes, the blower and its filter are inspected, and the carpets are lifted so the floor can be dried. The condenser is cleaned gently from the engine side outward so the fins are not flattened. The A/C is performance-tested last, once the electrics are known to be sound.
For a car that only saw heavy rain, the cabin filter, drain and condenser come first, and gauges go on before any refrigerant is considered.
When it is unsafe to keep driving
- Any smoke or burning smell after the car has been in water: stop and switch off.
- A fuse that keeps blowing: stop fitting new ones and have the wiring found.
- Airbag, ABS or other safety warning lights that appeared after water entered the car. These systems protect you, so have them checked before relying on the car.
- Water above the floor level inside the car: do not drive it until the carpets and wiring have been dealt with.
The free checkup and how we quote
The free 30-point A/C and electrical checkup takes about fifteen minutes and ends with a written report you keep, whether or not you have the work done here. Anything beyond the checkup is quoted in writing, and nothing paid starts until you approve it. How the quote is built is explained on how we quote.
Our monsoon car checkup page explains how a checkup before the rains works. Water-damage repairs depend entirely on what the inspection finds, so they are quoted in writing after it.
