Car AC service: how often it is needed and what a full service includes
Reviewed by G.M. Manigandan, founder and lead technician · Last reviewed
There is no single interval that fits every car. Your owner's manual is the baseline, and in Chennai, where the A/C runs most of the year on dusty, humid roads, the cabin filter and the condenser deserve a look more often than the minimum. Do not wait for a date if the car cools more slowly, the airflow weakens or a smell appears.
What the manufacturer's schedule says
Makers set different intervals, so your own owner's manual is the reference. As one example, the 2024 Toyota Fortuner owner's manual schedules replacement of the air-conditioner filter at 20,000 km intervals, and an inspection of the refrigerant amount at the same intervals or every 12 months. The same manual does not publish the refrigerant type or charge, which is why the figure has to come from the label on the car.
Not every maker schedules the A/C so clearly. If your manual says nothing about the A/C or the cabin filter, use the guidance below and your own use of the car.
Why Chennai changes the answer
Three things in Chennai wear on a car A/C faster than a mild, dry climate.
- Heat and year-round use. The A/C works for most of the year, so the compressor, the condenser fan and the cabin filter all log more hours.
- Dust and traffic. The condenser sits at the front of the car and collects dust, insects and road film, which makes it harder for the system to shed heat. The cabin filter loads with dust.
- Humidity and the monsoon. The evaporator stays wet, which is how smells start, and standing water and mud reach the front of the car and the electrical connectors.
A routine that makes sense
Cabin filter
Replace it on the manual's schedule, and earlier if it is dark, damp or crumbling when you look at it. A blocked filter weakens airflow and feeds smells, and it is one of the cheapest parts of the A/C to keep right.
Condenser and fan
Ask for the front of the condenser to be looked at when the car is in for a general service. A blocked condenser is a common reason for weak cooling in traffic.
The whole system, once a year
A yearly check before the hot months, which in Chennai means before March, finds a weak charge, a worn belt or a slow fan while there is time to fix it. A tired system tends to show itself as soon as the real heat arrives.
Gas
Refrigerant is not a consumable. If the charge is low, there is a leak. Topping up without finding it only repeats the job later, as the gas leak guide explains.
What a full A/C service should include
Ask any workshop what its A/C service covers. A proper one has these steps.
- A conversation about the symptoms and the history: when it started, whether it changes in traffic, what was done before.
- A visual inspection: the drive belt, the compressor clutch, the condenser face, the hoses and joints for oil traces, the cooling fan and the evaporator drain.
- The cabin filter checked and replaced if it needs it.
- A baseline performance test with gauges connected: pressures and vent temperature recorded against the weather on the day.
- Electrical checks: the relay and fuse, the fan operation and the pressure switch.
- If gas work is needed: the refrigerant is recovered and weighed, the system is evacuated and held under vacuum, leaks are checked for, oil is added as the system needs it, and the correct charge goes back in by weight against the figure for that car.
- A re-test, and a written report of what was measured.
Be wary of a quick top-up that skips gauges, does not weigh the charge and checks nothing for leaks. It is the cheapest-looking job and often the most expensive over a year.
Our free 30-point A/C and electrical checkup covers 17 A/C points and 13 electrical points. It is where the process above starts, and it is the step that tells us which of the later steps your car needs.
Signs that should not wait for the next service
- The car takes longer than it used to to cool down, or only cools while moving. See cold at night, warm in the afternoon.
- Weak airflow, or only some blower speeds working.
- A musty or burning smell. See what each smell means.
- Noise when the A/C is on. See what each noise means.
- The compressor clicking on and off quickly, or never engaging.
- Water in the footwell. See water on the passenger floor.
The free checkup and how we quote
The free 30-point A/C and electrical checkup takes about fifteen minutes and ends with a written report you keep, whether or not you have the work done here. Anything beyond the checkup is quoted in writing, and nothing paid starts until you approve it. How the quote is built is explained on how we quote.
Gas filling and other repairs are quoted in writing after the checkup. A single-module car and a car with front and rear A/C units are different jobs, and the leak check is part of a gas fill.
