R134a vs R1234yf: what the difference is and which one your car takes
Reviewed by G.M. Manigandan, founder and lead technician · Last reviewed
Most cars sold in India run on R134a. R1234yf is the newer refrigerant, standard in markets that regulate the global-warming impact of car air conditioning, and some cars sold here use it. They are different gases that must not be mixed, and the label on your own car settles which one it takes.
What separates the two
Global-warming impact
R134a has a global-warming potential of roughly 1,300 times that of carbon dioxide. R1234yf comes in at roughly 4. Neither damages the ozone layer. The difference in global-warming impact is the reason markets that legislated on mobile air conditioning moved to R1234yf.
Flammability
R134a is not flammable. R1234yf is classed A2L: low toxicity and mildly flammable. It is hard to ignite, which makes accidental ignition unlikely, but not impossible, so it needs service equipment rated for it, no open flame near the work and good ventilation. A car with R1234yf is not dangerous to drive.
Behaviour in the system
The two behave very similarly, so the system layout is largely the same. That is exactly why a technician cannot identify the refrigerant from the gauge readings. It is identified with an identifier, or from the vehicle's label and its service port fittings, never by assumption.
Oil and equipment
Compressor oil is specified for each car. PAG oil is common for belt-driven compressors, while the electrically driven compressors in hybrids and electric cars use a different, non-conductive oil. The charge is specified by weight in grams, and small errors matter more on a small charge. Recovery and charging equipment is also built for the refrigerant it handles.
Cost
R1234yf generally costs more to buy than R134a. That is one more reason to find out which your car takes before the work is quoted.
Why you cannot switch or mix
A system is built and charged for one refrigerant. Putting R134a into an R1234yf system, or the reverse, contaminates the charge, upsets the pressures and can damage the compressor. It also leaves a mixture that cannot be recycled and has to be disposed of. A car cannot be moved from one to the other by swapping the gas; that is a conversion, not a top-up.
Avoid any "alternative" or "eco" refrigerant that is not the one specified for your car. In particular, hydrocarbon products such as propane or butane blends are flammable and are not approved for systems that were built for R134a or R1234yf.
One car model, two refrigerants
Honda's owner's manual for the 5th-generation City, 2021 to 2022, lists R1234yf for Turkish-market cars and R134a for every other market, India included, with different charge quantities for each. Same car, same generation, two refrigerants, decided by where it was sold. This is why a chart or a book is never the last word, and the label on your own car outranks both.
How to find which one your car takes
- Open the bonnet and look for the A/C label, usually on the slam panel at the front or on a strut tower. It names the refrigerant and the charge in grams.
- Check the specifications section of the owner's manual, if your maker publishes it. Some do, and some do not. The 2024 Toyota Fortuner manual, for example, publishes neither the type nor the charge, and Honda and Tata print both in the manuals we have reviewed.
- Ask the workshop to show you the label and to say what refrigerant it is recovering and what it will charge back, by weight.
If your car is imported, or a variant sold in another market, say so when you book. The label on that particular car governs, and not a general model chart.
What the phase-down means for your car
India ratified the Kigali Amendment in September 2021, which commits it to phase down HFC refrigerants, R134a among them, in steps from the 2030s. A phase-down limits how much of these gases is produced and used over time. It is a schedule of reductions, not a date on which cars stop being serviceable, and your car keeps running on the refrigerant it was built for. We do not give legal advice on what any workshop is required to do under the schedule.
What a proper gas job does about this
Before connecting anything, the refrigerant is identified, and it is checked against the label. The old charge is recovered and weighed, the system is held under vacuum and checked for leaks, and the correct amount goes back in by weight. A job done that way never depends on guessing the gas. See what a gas fill includes and what drives its cost.
The free checkup and how we quote
The free 30-point A/C and electrical checkup takes about fifteen minutes and ends with a written report you keep, whether or not you have the work done here. Anything beyond the checkup is quoted in writing, and nothing paid starts until you approve it. How the quote is built is explained on how we quote.
