Renault Kwid and Triber A/C not cooling: where we start

GM Car A/C Service 5 min read

Kwid and Triber are the two Renaults we see most in the workshop. Weak cooling on either one is usually airflow or charge before it is anything expensive, and the order the checks are done in decides how much you spend.

The order we check in

Start at the vents. Put the blower on full with the recirculation closed and feel how hard the air comes out, not how cold it is. Weak air with cold vents is an airflow fault. Strong air that is barely cool is a refrigerant or a heat-rejection fault. Those two answers send the job down different roads and the test costs nothing.

Cabin filter and blower

Chennai dust loads a cabin filter faster than the service interval assumes, and a loaded filter starves the evaporator of air. On a small cabin the driver often reads that as the A/C failing when the cooling itself is intact. The filter is a part and a few minutes, and it is worth doing before anything is diagnosed further.

The condenser face

Both cars sit low and their condensers take the full load of dust and insects behind the front bumper. A blocked face cannot dump heat, so the high-side pressure rises and cooling falls away exactly when you need it, standing in traffic. We look at the face and the cooling fan together, because the fan is the only thing moving air through it when the car is stopped.

Charge and leaks

A system slightly low still cools in the morning and gives up in the afternoon. We recover, weigh what came out, pressure test for the leak and only then charge back. A system that has needed gas twice in a year has a leak, and topping it up again is not a repair.

Electrical, last

Relay, fuse, pressure switch and clutch command are quick to measure and are what we check when the mechanical picture is clean. They are last in the order because they are the least common answer, not because they are hard.

The Triber carries a longer cabin

A Triber has three rows of seats to cool and a Kwid has one small cabin, so the same shortfall reads differently to the two owners. A Kwid owner reports the A/C as slightly weak. A Triber owner reports that the back is not cooling, because the last row feels any loss first and feels it worst.

That difference matters for the diagnosis. Complaints about the rear of a longer cabin often turn out to be a system that is a little short across the whole car rather than a fault specific to the back of it, so we measure at the front vents as well before assuming a rear-specific problem.

Cools at night, weak by afternoon

This is the most common way a Chennai A/C tells you it is losing margin. At night the system has an easy job and hides a shortfall. At forty degrees in standing traffic there is no margin left, and a fault that was invisible at 8am is obvious at 3pm. It is a genuine fault reported honestly, not a driver imagining things, and we wrote up the full reasoning in cold at night, warm in the afternoon.

Renault does not publish the charge figure

The Kwid and Triber owner's manuals sold in India do not state the A/C refrigerant charge. Where a brand does publish it we use that figure; where it does not, the number comes off the label under the bonnet of your own car and nowhere else. We will not fill to a figure taken from an aftermarket chart or from a manual written for another market, because those are averaged across variants and years and an average is how a system ends up overcharged.

Open the bonnet and look for the label on the slam panel or a strut tower. Any workshop charging your system should be able to point at it, and tell you what it recovered and what it put back, by weight.

What the checks cost

The free 30-point A/C and electrical checkup is ₹0, takes about fifteen minutes, and you keep the written report whether or not the work is done here. A gas fill is ₹1,500 for a single module and ₹2,200 for a double, with the leak check included in both. Anything larger is quoted after the diagnosis rather than guessed on the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Kwid A/C cool at night but not in the afternoon?

Because a small shortfall only shows when the system is working hard. At night the load is light and a system that is low on charge or short of condenser airflow still cools. In afternoon traffic there is no margin left and the same fault becomes obvious. The checks are the same either way: airflow first, then charge and leak test.

The back of my Triber does not cool. Is that a separate fault?

Often it is not. A longer cabin shows any loss at the back first, so a system that is slightly short across the whole car is reported as a rear problem. We measure at the front vents as well before treating it as a fault specific to the rear, because fixing the wrong end is expensive and does not work.

How much gas does a Renault Kwid A/C need?

Renault does not state the charge in the India owner's manual, so the figure to go by is the label under the bonnet of your own car. We recover and weigh what is in the system first, then charge back to that label rather than to a chart figure averaged across variants.
